Basic Peace Officer Certificate (Police Academy) Completion Plan



The Basic Peace Officer Course Certificate (Program) offered by the Navarro College Police Academy (NCPA) consists of 779 total hours, of which 720 is required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) curriculum. There are 42 topics of instruction ranging in length from 1 hour of classroom time to 74 hours. The program includes training in the following areas: current Penal and Traffic Laws, Crash Investigation, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Defensive Tactics, First Aid/CPR, Patrol Tactics, Firearms and Police Driving and many others.

The Navarro College Police Academy program is designed to prepare students to pass the Peace Officer licensing exam given at the end of the program. An additional 59 hours of training is provided and includes, a 14-week Physical Training Program (27hrs), 8 hours of extended skills training for active shooter scenario training and 8 hours of O.C/Pepper Spray Training. Sixteen hours of comprehensive review for the State Licensing Exam is provided at the completion of the Academy.

Admission to Navarro College is a separate procedure from admission to the Navarro College Police Academy. Eligible applicants must first meet all admission criteria for Navarro College. Applicants are then required to submit a Police Academy Application and Personal History Statement to the Police Academy Coordinator, schedule a FAST Fingerprint appointment, and take the TSI test. Exemptions for the TSI test are listed in the catalog.

Admission Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be 21 years of age, or 21 years of age by the graduation date of the Academy
  • A student 18 years of age or older is eligible for licensing if the student:

1. Has received an Associate’s Degree or 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university; or
2. Has received an Honorable Discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States after at least two (2) years of service

  • No Class B Misdemeanor convictions in the past 10 years
  • No Class A Misdemeanor or felony convictions
  • No conviction or community supervision for any family violence offense
  • Applicants must pass a physical examination, a psychological examination, and a drug screen immediately submitted to the Academy upon completion
  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Must not be prohibited by law from operating a motor vehicle
  • Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition
  • Cannot have a dishonorable discharge from the military

Completed Application with Supporting Documents  

Candidates application should include:

  • Completed and notarized Navarro College Police Academy Application
  • Completed and notarized Personal History Statement
  • FAST Fingerprint submission
  • TCOLE L-2 Form (with drug results) and L-2 Notice of Duties form
  • TCOLE L-3 Form and L-3 Notice of Duties Form
  • Color copy of driver’s license
  • Copy of social security card (front and back)
  • Copy of high school transcript/Diploma or proof of GED
  • Copy of military DD214 (if applicable)
  • Copy of TSI exam score
  • Copy of birth certificate, U.S. passport, or documentation showing U.S. citizenship

 

Please Note

With an additional 12 hour course credit completed with Navarro College, and completion of the Police Academy, students may initiate paperwork with the Police Academy Coordinator or the Department Chair of Criminal Justice to articulate credit towards a Criminal Justice certificate or associates degree.

Courses that will be awarded through the articulation process are CJLE 2420, CJLE 2421, and CJLE 2522.

All in-service courses are accredited by TCOLE and are offered year-round through the Navarro College Police Academy.
